With its enchanting lake, Loverehas some major cultural highlights: an impressive fifteenth-century basilica, the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, embellished by great Lombardy artists; an ancient parish church; a 16th century monastery, a place of pilgrimage; and an admirable collection of paintings: the Tadini Academy, with a concentration of masterpieces of the Veneto and Lombardy School from the 14th to the 19th centuries, from Lorenzo Veneziano to Tintoretto, Parmigianino, Tiepolo, Hayez, Jacopo Bellini and others.
Just a few kilometres away, in the church of Santa Maria della Neve in Pisogne (km 4)the cycle of the Frescoes by Romanino, can be admired, one of the most important monuments of Renaissance painting from Brescia and in the Suardi oratory of Trescore (18), there is the masterpiece by Lorenzo Lotto. A little more 40 kms away there is Bergamo, with its historic Piazza Vecchia, the Cathedral and the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore; and Brescia with the Castle, the Piazza del Foro, the Roman Theatre, the Tosia-Martinengo Art Gallery and the Santa Giulia Museum where exhibitions attracting visitors from Italy and abroad are held.
Nature
From the harbour of Lovere it is possible to “set sail” for evocative mini-cruises by battello or sailing boat and visit Monteisola, the largest island in a lake in Europe with its delightful fishing villages, tiny hamlets and elegant aristocratic villas. There are excursions to the Valle del freddo (km 5), with spectacular Alpine scenery, perhaps the most interesting and remarkable natural phenomenon in the Bergamo area; you can visit the Pyramids of Zone (22), a unique sight of which there are few examples in the world; the Torbiere del Sebino (34), a very fine natural reserve; the Rock carvings of Capodiponte (55), the most surprising and moving evidence of the presence of prehistoric man in the Alps; and the Park of the Adamello (55), an important protected area with paths and trails for easy trekking and hikes requiring greater exertion. And for the youngest visitors, there is the Archeopark in Boario Terme (7), a large open-air interactive museum in the heart of nature to relive 15 thousand years of history exploring the grottos, Neolithic farms and the huts of the large village on piles and learn about the ancient activities.
Sport
In the winter there is skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing and, for those who do not want to go skiing, walks with rackets and ice-skating, reaching the nearby ski resorts of Montecampione (km 20) with its 11 ski-lifts, 40 kilometres of panoramic ski slopes and one of the largest systems for the artificial production of snow in Europe; Schilpario (41), a paradise for cross-country skiing, with the Pinewood Slopes in the heart of a magical pine forest and Val Palot (13 km) with its natural scenic beauty. There is also Borno (21), with 8 ski-lifts and new slopes, the Passo della Presolana (25), ), ideal for taking first steps on skis; Colere (34), one of the ideal spots for downhill skiing; and Ponte di Legno (78), amongst the oldest and noblest winter sports’ resorts in the Alps with the very famous Corno d’Aola black slope.
In the summer, there is swimming, sailing, canoeing, scuba diving, basketball, tennis and fishing at the tourist harbour of Cornasola (500 mt) with swimming pools and the ultra-modern sailing-sports centre; there is windsurf at Grè (1,5 km), climbing on the nearby practice wall of Castro (1.5 km); and trekking, mountain bike-riding and horse-riding in the woods looking on to the lake.
